Now that the sun is out, you’ll likely be spending more time in your garage. Whether you’ve set up a workshop or are just making routine car repairs, homeowners with garages should take note of these five tips to get everything in order before diving into a summer project.

1. Tidy up clutter.

Over the colder months, you may have used your garage for storage and not much else. Now that you want to use the space, you’ll have to figure out how to organize. Pegboards can help you hang things up out of the way, while storage drawers are helpful for getting tools into order.

You may want to invest in installing permanent storage cabinets, similar to the kind you can find in kitchens, but made out of more rugged materials. While these are more expensive, if you plan to use your garage for multiple projects, they’re worth the cost.

2. Ensure you have proper lighting.

Most garages aren’t intended for long-term occupancy, meaning the lighting you’ll find inside them is often inadequate for any tasks beyond parking a car. Adding lighting, whether hanging from the ceiling or even lamps placed on the floor, can make your garage much more usable.

Since many of the tasks you’ll be doing in your garage are detail-oriented, think less “mood lighting” and more “see what you’re doing.” Pay special attention to the lighting around workbenches to eliminate shadows.

3. Set up workbenches.

If you want to get anything actually accomplished in your garage, you’ll need flat surfaces to do it. Whether you set up a table or a fully-equipped workbench, it’s worth it to go beyond spreading everything out on the floor.

The type of setup you choose depends on what hobbies and interests you have. If you’re into crafting, a sturdy table will be good, but if you are a woodworker, then saws and lathes may have to enter the picture.

4. Make sure the garage door is working properly.

It’s all well and good to set up the perfect garage workspace, but if the garage door itself is faulty, it doesn’t do you much good. Routine maintenance is important for garage doors, especially automatic garage doors. Ensure that everything is in working order and that it is properly lubricated.

If your garage door is damaged, repairing or replacing is best done sooner rather than later. For automatic doors, the auto-reverse feature is crucial to check. If the door does not reverse when a foreign object is placed in its path, get it inspected and repaired right away to ensure your safety and the safety of any children and pets.

5. Keep safety supplies handy.

Now that your garage is all set for crafts and hobbies, you’ll be spending much more time there. That also means the chance for accidents increases. Keeping a first-aid kit and fire extinguisher in your garage is a good idea in general, but especially when you’re in there for long hours.

Likewise, eye protection and hearing protection, like goggles and ear muffs, are good to keep around if you’re going to be doing especially messy or loud activities, such as woodworking.

Taking advantage of your garage is simple when you plan ahead and prepare the space in a way that works for your hobbies. Some effort now will pay off well later.
